Defence and Security

Building on our heritage

Skylon Park will have a strong focus on the Defence and Security sector. This will build on the deep rooted association Hereford has with the UK special forces as the base of the SAS, a globally recognised name from the Defence Sector.

The existence of other key sites, DERA/Qinetiq in Malvern and GCHQ in Cheltenham, demonstrates a local cluster of strategic sites from which Skylon Park can draw.  There is an inevitable emergence of businesses in the security sector.  Herefordshire is already the location for over 200 companies in the sector, many of which have been set up by ex-military personnel who have engaged in the Special Forces supply chain utilising their specialist skills to maximise business opportunities.

Case Study

From 2003 to 2016 Minimal Risk have secured and maintained contracts to provide in post overseas security managers and intelligence analysts to support British Government deployments across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and America, which has included operations in many high risk regions.  In the UK the Company has worked on a number of sensitive projects with a significant dynamic threat including product and food contamination recall and risk assessments for national retail portfolios.

Clients include Britvic Soft Drinks, Lockheed Martin Corporation, British Land and the UK Foreign Office.  They have a team employed on the Emmerdale set in Yorkshire and provide specialist event stewarding and crowd safety services at major events worldwide e.g. the Paris and Dubai Air Shows.

Minimal Risk recently announced a new partnership teaming arrangement with Olive Group Holdings, a Costellis company based in the Middle East.  Building on their relative strengths, they will collaborate in business development and in recruitment for their global operations.

Having moved to Hereford during Bob’s military career, Bob and Jill wanted to stay in Hereford after he retired.  Now located in the newly built Skylon Court on Hereford Enterprise Zone, they have everything they need to maintain and continue to develop their business.  “It’s home for us, and with modern technology nowadays we can easily communicate with our team and clients whether they are based in the UK or further afield.  There is a community feel to the Skylon development and it is an ideal springboard for the future. We do anticipate engaging more personnel in the near future to facilitate recently secured contracts.  Hereford is also home to other ex-military personnel who have also set up businesses locally using their expertise, which we regularly call on for training new recruits.” Bob Cole, Director
